Preserve Rollins Pass Joins the History Colorado Affiliate Network, Strengthening Statewide Connections in Preservation, Research, and Public History
Preserve Rollins Pass is pleased to announce that we have joined History Colorado’s Affiliate Network, a statewide initiative connecting organizations dedicated to preserving, studying, interpreting, and sharing Colorado’s history.
The Affiliate Network reflects the remarkable breadth of historical work taking place across the state. Its members include not only museums and historical societies, but also archives, libraries, archaeological organizations, universities, historic sites, and other organizations whose work keeps Colorado’s past accessible, documented, and meaningful. Current affiliates range from the Colorado Archaeological Society–Denver Chapter and Denver Public Library Special Collections and Archives to the Museum of Boulder, Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, University of Denver Museum of Anthropology, Ute Indian Museum, and Western Museum of Mining & Industry.
Preserve Rollins Pass brings a different kind of historical resource to that statewide conversation: the landscape itself. Here, thousands of years of human history remain layered across the Continental Divide in evidence of Paleoindian and later Native American use, internationally significant game drive complexes, historic wagon roads, railroad grades, ruins, artifacts, recreation, research, and continued stewardship—allowing visitors and researchers to encounter much of the story where history actually happened. Protecting that layered record requires many of the same disciplines represented throughout the Affiliate Network, including research, archaeology, interpretation, documentation, education, collaboration, and preservation advocacy.
Through the Affiliate Network, Preserve Rollins Pass will gain additional opportunities for shared learning, professional resources, statewide gatherings, and collaboration with organizations confronting many of the same challenges. Just as importantly, we look forward to contributing what our own work on Rollins Pass has taught us about researching complex cultural landscapes, communicating their significance, and advocating for their thoughtful stewardship.
History rarely survives through the work of one organization alone. It endures because researchers, museums, archives, land managers, preservationists, educators, communities, and individuals share knowledge and build upon one another’s work. Joining History Colorado’s Affiliate Network strengthens those connections while giving Preserve Rollins Pass another way to help ensure that one of Colorado’s most remarkable historic landscapes remains understood, respected, and protected for generations to come.
